WELCOME TO THE
STUBBINGTON MEDICAL PRACTICE
We hope
that you will find this website helpful in planning the services you may require
from us. On registering with our practice you will be invited to attend for a
new patient health check so that we may have some background information on you
pending the arrival of your medical record (which may take a few weeks).

Patient Survey – The practice, with the help of our Patient Participation Group (PPG) is undertaking a patient survey during October. They will be sent out to anyone who has registered their e-mail address with us and also handed out by members of the PPG during the flu clinics. If you wish to take part, please ask at reception for a form. Please only complete one survey either electronically or on paper, or else the results will be incorrect. The paper survey once completed should be filed in the box in the waiting rooms. Once all the results are in and collated, they will be discussed between the practice and the PPG and a report published in the waiting rooms and on our website. Your assistance with this survey will be much appreciated.
Flu Clinics – As you will have noticed from the bunting and posters around the building, it is that time of year already! If you are aged 65 and over, or in an At Risk category ie diabetics, asthmatics on inhaled steroids, suffering from cardiovascular disease, renal failure etc, please make an appointment to get vaccinated.
Priority NHS care for veterans - A veteran is someone who has served in the armed forces for at least one day, and there are around 4.5m veterans in the UK. When servicemen and women leave the armed forces, their healthcare is the responsibility of the NHS. All veterans are entitled to priority access to NHS hospital care for any condition, as long as it's related to their service, whether or not they receive a war pension. All people leaving the armed forces are given a summary of their medical records, which they are advised to give to their new GP when they register. Veterans are encouraged to tell their GP about their veteran status in order to benefit from priority treatment. A minority of people leaving the armed forces need access to mental health services; others might require it later in civilian life. Veterans can access the Medical Assessment Programme (MAP), which is available to veterans deployed on operations since 1982. MAP offers comprehensive physical and mental health assessments for veterans who feel that their condition may be linked to military service.
PRESCRIPTION CHANGES – In the current financial climate, the practice is keen to assist the NHS save money, where it does not affect their care of a patient. One of the simple ways we can do this is by changing some expensive drugs to an equivalent alternative which has exactly the same ingredients but is more cost-effective. Savings made in this way can be re-directed to assist in the setting up of more local services. If any of your repeat medication has been changed, an explanatory leaflet will be attached to your repeat prescription.
SURGERY ALTERATIONS – We are in the process of getting plans drawn up to alter part of the ground floor of the surgery. It is intended to change the layout of Dr Murray’s consultation room to move her door so that she can have her examination couch within her room. This will free up her current examination room which will be extended. This room will then be used by the phlebotomist and it is envisaged that Portsmouth Hospitals Trust will extend their clinic times within the surgery. This will reduce the length of time patients have to wait for a blood test at the surgery. Depending on how many additional appointments are made available, it may also reduce the number of patients having to travel to Fareham Community Hospital for a blood test.
FAREHAM COMMISSIONING GROUP – The aim of the group of practices is to work together to develop and promote local services. Some of the services developed by the group include:
- Local consultant led Rapid Assessment Service for elderly patients
- Virtual Ward service to provide a service in the community for patients with complex medical and social needs.
- Consultant ENT outpatient service at Highlands Road Medical Centre
- Consultant Cardiology outpatient service at Westlands Medical Centre in Portchester.
- Consultant provided Gynaecology service, at Rowner Road Surgery and at Whiteley
- Extended services for local optometrists to do extra repeat test for patient with high readings to rule out suspected glaucoma.
A local dermatology service is currently being set up at which will be based at Highlands Road Medical Centre and is expected to be available soon.
TEXT MESSAGING SERVICE - If you have a mobile phone and wish to register for our FREE text service to remind you of your appointment time, please complete a consent form which is available from reception.
Cryotherapy – Patients who have been referred for cryotherapy by their GP can book appointments on Wednesday morning with Drs Paterson, Tenters or Tan and Friday mornings with Drs Hopkins, Robins, Tan or Murray.
PHYSIOTHERAPY – SELF-REFERRAL – Patients can now get an appointment to see the physiotherapists at Fareham Community Hospital without a referral from their doctor. Physiotherapy can be particularly beneficial if you are suffering from low back or neck pain, recent strains or sprains or joint and muscular pain. Information Leaflets and self-referral forms are available in the waiting rooms or at reception.
PATHWAYS OF CARE – If you have recently been referred and you feel that the referral pathway could be improved, please could you forward your written comments to the Practice Manager.
REGISTRARS – The following changes are happening with doctors under training at the surgery:
- Dr Helen Evans has completed her training and returned to the Navy. We wish her well in her new posting.
- Dr Olga Rider will complete her training on 31 October but is expected to return in December to cover Dr Murray’s clinics during her maternity leave.
- Dr Alexandra Macdonald joined the practice on 3 August for a year under the supervision of Dr Cannon.
- Dr Charlotte Hughes joins the practice on 10 October for 6 months under the supervision of Dr Paterson.
PATIENT DECISION AIDS – The NHS website, www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk has a link for patients to enable them to make informed choices about their medical conditions and its treatment. At present it has information available on Prostate Cancer, Knee Arthritis and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, but more links will be added in the future.
OUT OF HOURS TELEPHONE NUMBER – The telephone number for the Out of Hours service has recently changed and is now 0300 300 2012. The charge for 0300 numbers are the same as dialling 01 or 02 numbers.
